Thieves puzzle me: why would they think there were pipes under here? Anyway they gave me the opportunity to nail down a floor board for the first time, so I guess there’s a benefit from every silly decision ;-)
And we discovered an underfloor so that’s not so bad!
Just like the Bob Dylan song goes, The Times They Are A Changin’. In 2008 the world changed. Recession hit. Hard. Jobs and homes were lost. Hope fell by the way side for many. Four years later and the future is still uncertain.
And yet over the past year, out of the doom and gloom, out of the endless news stories documenting the change in the world’s fortunes – something magical has happened.
An old school, built at the turn of the 20th Century and abandoned in 2009, has been transferred from Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council into the hands of us, Saltburn Community and Arts Association – saving it from redevelopment.
We want to turn it into an arts centre every member of the community can use, and provide a space for local artisans to come together.
We hope something good can come out of the economic downturn. By taking control of the building we hope to create something wonderful without the help of the government, but with the help of the community, for the community.
The remit for the centre is three-fold – a space for sport, visual and performing arts, as well as a place to meet and chat.
We want both artists and those that have never picked up a paintbrush or donned a costume to come together under one roof and share their stories, learn from each other, and form a more solid ‘artistic community’ within the town.
